Plumbing in Hornsby
Two things decide plumbing in Hornsby Shire, and neither is soil or weather. This is the Bushland Shire, where all trees are protected bar a short list, so the tree cracking your sewer usually cannot be removed and the repair has to work around it. And half the shire has no mains gas at all: Galston, Arcadia and Dural run 45kg LPG bottles, which is a different pressure and different appliances. From Waitara and Thornleigh out to Berowra and Galston, a licensed local plumber is minutes away, same-day and 24 hours for genuine emergencies.
Common plumbing problems we see in Hornsby
Reactive-clay pipe cracks. Council protects all trees bar a short list of weeds and hazards, and the root zone counts as well as the trunk. So trenching near something significant is a permissions question, not just a cost.
Hot water systems giving out. Sydney's water is soft, so a dead unit here is usually a spent anode or element, not scale. We repair or replace gas, electric, heat-pump and solar, often same day.
Ageing galvanised & earthenware pipe. Older homes in Wahroonga, North Hornsby and Pennant Hills still run on steel and clay pipe that rusts, roots and splits over time.

My hot water system failed and it isn't that old. Why?
Soft water runs through Sydney, so scale is rarely what ends a unit here, unlike harder-water areas. The cause is usually a spent sacrificial anode or a burnt-out element, both often repairable. You will hear which makes better financial sense, a repair or a replacement, before we start.
Roots again. Can I just take the tree out?
Roots, nearly always, rather than the ground. What matters here is that you usually cannot remove the tree: anything over five metres needs Council approval, which takes three to four weeks and can be refused. So we cut the roots back and seal the joint they came through, which fixes it without touching the tree.
Do you work out on the rural blocks with LPG?
Yes, and out on the rural fringe we work on LPG installations as often as mains gas. Galston, Arcadia and Dural largely have no gas network at all, so bottles, regulators and automatic changeovers are routine work for us rather than an occasional oddity.
Can I run my natural gas cooktop on LPG?
Not as it stands. Natural gas and LPG are supplied at different pressures and the injectors in a burner are sized for one or the other, so a natural gas appliance on LPG will over-fire and is not safe. Most quality appliances have a manufacturer's conversion kit that changes the jets and the regulator setting, and that work has to be done by a licensed gas fitter and certified. Some appliances have no kit at all, which is worth checking before you buy rather than after.
